Introduction to Pukulan Cimande Pusaka Sanders-American Pencak Silat and the Old Royal Siam-Thailand Jerng Martial Art Connection Beginning with art I first learned from Guru John Malter, that he learned from Willy Wetzel, I sought to unravel the actual history of the art. Along the way and after many trips to Indonesia, speaking with people who were in the prisoner of war camps with master Wetzel and others, I quickly became aware that story of the Chinese Kung Fu- master practicing with the Indonesian master Mas Jud for 3 years was positively not true. Once I located the actual family of Mas Jud, and located many of his old students to ask, this was verified 100 percent. I wrote a theses on this subject for the University of Asian Martial art studies that earned my Sc. Degree from them and which was turned into the book “The Real Pencak Silat and History of Mas Jud” which for the first time, accurately explained his life, his art and what he did. The problem still remained that the intricate flowing movements I was first taught, were never seen or equaled in any Indonesian style I saw, as a whole. As one of my long time students said, that movement stood out like a Unicorn in Indonesia. Their arts today by comparison are stiff and robotic when compared to these fluid moves. The Old Mas Jud students had much more flow than normally seen in Pencak Silat, as it relates to the fighting applications, but still, at least now, still not as much. I had to continually “fix” what I learned there to make it more applicable to the flow and continuous combative moves. The village Cimande, while having some very valuable striking applications was just awful in there stiff executions of these moves ,which again I had to transform into a better way of moving and delivery and I did. Make no mistake I also learned the entire Village Cimande art of Embah Kahir and the old Sera from Pendekar Mama Sukarma before adding my way of movement to them and after testing was awarded the highest title of Pendekar in those arts as well. This mastery achievement which was signed off on by EVERY village elder there at the time. I wanted to see what he had given Mas Jud and how it fit in . I also learned from the Mas Jud family as well, the full Sera Depok he used and his training and animal styles and was given the authority to teach his entire art they had it, signed by his family. No one else who claims to have Mas Jud lineage has this to my knowledge. Yet I still need to put my delivery system to all of this to improve it when I teach it . Where did the better continuity of movement and flow go and where did it come from in the first place? Up till now this was a lot less clear. The answer to this puzzle has now been greatly exposed. One of my friends and a person who buys a lot of my DVDs and is a scholar of many older arts, recently sent me a video, a video in which I saw an old art, not Islamic, that he wanted to share with me. I sat down to watch and I was AMAZED at what I saw. This video I will share here showed THE EXACT TYPE OF MOVEMENT WE LEARNED IN MY FIRST ART FOR THE MORE DISTANCE APPLICATIONS. I, at once recognized stances, positions and more, even the exact same manner my teacher used to centrally tie his red sash with the same knot, it could actually have been a film from an early class of the advanced people back then! Take a look at this video to see what I mean. Once I saw where this was from, THAILAND, I WAS SHOCKED and I need to relate a strange but related story that created my surprise and cemented the connection that had been missing for so long. Some years ago when I lived in Caifornia, I received a hand written 3-page letter. The letter explained how a royal family was driven from Thailand, had a long journey and went to Java .There this art became part of the base of the Wetzel art, in fact he said, A MAJOR PORTION. I did not know this person and frankly, sadly I dismissed it as some kind of made-up nonsense. Because, NO ONE HAD EVER SUGGESTED THIS IN THE PAST. I kept that letter for a long time but when I moved and had to discard many things it went in the trash. IF BY ANY CHANCE THE PERSON WHO SENT ME THAT LETTER READS THIS, PLEASE CONTACT ME AGAIN! So until now, I basically forgot and dismissed it. BUT HERE I SAW THE ART WITH MY OWN EYES AND YES, THAT PART WAS FROM THE ANCIENT SIAM-THAILAND AREA. I saw much more after viewing more clips. Its name is generic, like Pencak Silat is to Indonesia and it is called JERNG which basically means FIGHT, a fighting art and there were many family styles of that, as there are family Pencak Silat styles in Indonesia etc .The written history is not one hundred percent clear but goes back over 700 years to the Kingdom of Lana in what is now North Thailand and the influence was from Burma –India etc. It is characterized by continues and fluid moves without interruption, the same as in the first art I was taught. My theory is THIS IS THE REAL COLABORATION BETWEEN THE INDO PENCAK SILAT –MAS JUD AND ANOTHER ART. Remember that name they use OI KIM BOEN and some variations on the first two words, like King Boen. Well, it’s funny they even tried to pass this off as a Chinese man. BOEN IS ACTUALLY A DUTCH NAME! BOEN NAME MEANING - DUTCH variant of Boone, Norwegian Boen habitational name from a common farm name Boen The farm’ FROM bo, farm or meadow.” HERE I BELIEVE IS THE REAL NAME ONG KHUN BOEN. Ong is a numerative noun for Kings, Princes, Angels, Palaces, etc. so the King variation I have seen was more correct KHUN, MEANS SIR OR LORD, MASTER. This language is Thai! Watching further clips of this art I saw many interesting things. On one video, 40 seconds in, the man does the triangle Bow of Mas Jud. In one sequence there are Sera Depok Juru moves being performed. In another clip the man is perfuming ON THE EXACT SAME SQUARE WITH THE X AND STRAIGHT LINE AS IN MAS JUDS SERA DEPOK AND IS SEEN IN MY BOOK! In one video there was a large diagram they were performing on, the same as another Dutch Indo style uses here who claims some connection to Mas Jud, but it’s not from him, its Old Siamese. Follow this now. In the 1930’s a great upheaval occurred in Thailand and some intellectuals who had studied on PARIS, BRUTALLY reorganized the country in some Communistic/Western revolution. Basically decapitating hence the death of the old aristocracy and revamped a lot of the old culture, interestingly this is when “sportified” Muay Thai emerged. This sport, just as Perisa Diri, was in Indonesia A DIRECT ATTEMPT TO KILL OFF THE OLD ARTS and remove the ancient influences. In the real Jerng their stances and postures are prayers to God, etc. as well as fighting positions. Back in the 60-70s Chinese Kung Fu was very popular and it seems they tried to pass off the name with a Chinese twist but oddly left the last Dutch name intact. Back then it passed as most had no idea, we didn’t. Was this because Dutch Indonesians related the tale? Or did a Dutchman marry into a Siam family, learn the art and go to Indonesia where he showed the art and maintained the royal formality of his name simply for prestige, etc.? The Dutch had been in Siam for 400 years, so it’s possible. Siam by the way had the name changed to Thailand in 1939 in the upheaval I will mention. One person said to me, maybe it was a Chinese living in Siam at the time? Well I doubt that because if that is so, there was no need to use a Dutch name, just use the real Chinese name. No, that Chinese tale was fabricated purely to take advantage of the Kung –Fu Shaolin temple craze and they even had Willy Wetzle living in a secret Shaolin-like monastery in Indonesia as a Black 10th degree dragon as part of that temple-kung fu type lore to sell the art when I first started. That nonsense was written up and put on the wall for all the students to see by John Malter who got it right from Willy Wetzel his teacher. Who would have known what Jerng was? This is the same reason they never used the term “Pencak Silat” as well. As that old letter I received told me, an aristocratic old family had to flee and seek their fortune elsewhere, wound up in Java teaching their royal art. This now seems so. There is no way a lot of what we were taught was not Jerng from some source. Some questions remain. The Thais who do Jerng now for sure do some of what I saw Juds people do, like the drawn diagram on the ground, a circle drill, the Bow and some specific Juru moves of Sera Depok. Their influence must have run deep in his version of Sera Depok, etc. So while I do not know exactly who the Dutch man, or part Dutch, part Thai man named Ong Khun Boen, I can tell you that I saw that man’s name in both the Wetzel line and the DeThoaurs line. I saw it in the De Thouars line when I saw it on a test one of them gave their students, in the form of, “who is Oi Kim Boen?” He had blatantly denied knowing a thing of this name before I pulled his old test out of a pile of papers we were going through together and showed him his one question he prepared for his own students in the past asking that very question! Never heard of him , LOL, YEA RIGHT. But he refused to comment at all and was embarrassed I found it after flat out denying he knew anything of the name and just got up and stormed off. Just more of the planned cover-up. In modern times it appears a lot of Jerng may have lost much of the old combative applications as they seem to concentrate now on movies and the dance applications, maybe also more spiritual applications which by the way are also prayers to God as they move, taken from the old ways. God is always present it seems in beautiful things in the old martial arts which is why no one I ever saw would teach ANY atheist their arts. Also, although I clearly saw our Crane and Monkey in the moves, some of the practioners when asked seem to be at a loss to know what animals it contains. Or want to keep the secret we already have! One however, also showed Tiger and I think they are attempting to put back this emphases in some of the family styles lost along the way just as Indo lost a lot to Islam. At any rate we have not forgotten them nor do we hide them. In a sense my trips to Indonesia allowed me to put back many combat applications needed, but the Thai way of movement guided me to seek more effectiveness through movement and I improved the movement as well over the years so we don’t just flow in one speed like they do, and we learn to work in waves and spirals and use our entire body from the foot up. This they never developed in any of the movements in the clips I have seen them do. But I want to give the credit that was denied previously. The very best parts of how we move come from the old royal Thailand Jerng systems, period. Not Chinese and not Indonesian. Pukulan Cimande Pusaka Sanders American Pencak Silat has a strong Jerng base we cannot and will not deny and I far prefer to any moves by any modern Silat in Indonesia you now see. But we have forged these moves with old Silat combative ways as well just as the old story indicated, proposed to have done. People always ask, “SO YOU ARE VILLAGE CIMANDE?” No, we are not, we are unique. We will add more information if and when it’s discovered. After so long another MAJOR part of the puzzle is solved. I am the FIRST to come out with this and publish it publically. If some people wish to stay in the 60’s and other times, with fables they keep telling, they may, but I seek the truth and it has been revealed again. Glory to God. Next is Some Information on the Indonesian Portion of My Art Pencak Silat is a term which refers to the general category of martial arts that come from Indonesia. Indonesia has many different styles of Pencak Silat and our style of martial art is the lifelong creation of the original Pencak Silat, martial art of Mas Jud in Java. Pendekar Sanders has refined and added many revelations in the delivery system and Jurus, making it unique and found only here. You can see our new logo which adds the name “Sanders” to the art, as it truly is now a development of over 40 years of Pendekar Sanders efforts to develop it to where it is now. This will now always be present in real Pukulan Cimande Pusaka the name Sanders will be added to the end. Over the years Pendekar Sanders refined a very specific way of moving after studying the best masters he had and saw in his travels. At first we showed the students techniques and Jurus and then tried to help them learn these correct methods to move, added to the techniques. Many however, were so focused on the Jurus, they failed to internalize the way of movement, which is the key and crowning glory of the art. We recently introduced a new DVD about the body and breath and one on internal health movements using the Jurus and circle of creation which will start to develop this type of movement internally, first. Then that most vital portion will never be lost. This will usher in a new era in Pukulan Cimande Puska Sanders training sequences, so we have added so the new logo as well. It has a very deep meaning and students will be enlightened to that. It is the logo of the art now. Even if you tried PCPS in the past, give it a new look. With the advent of the newer DVDs many will be brought to much higher levels than ever before. Get excited, very excited and come join us. We are often copied and pirated but never equaled. We use animal mannerisms in the techniques and the four elements in PCPS AMERICAN PENCAK SILAT. This is not seen in modern silat. The oldest fighting arts of Java were called Buhun, in the ancient Sunda language, meaning, the first, and the east, where the sun rises and gives us the holy light of GOD. This ancient silat over 4000 years old used animals and the elements. Animals like the snake and monkey, bird crane, eagle etc. It was fluid and beautiful. The later silat like Cimande, etc. has only vestiges of the old silat, BUT it was reshaped, frankly ruined by Islam and made to look like second rate karate in many cases, the animals removed with the elements and the result created very stiff and robotic looking moves in what I call Modern Silat, which is All of them after the Islamic Invasion, but for a few who fled to Bali at the time. PCPS AMERICAN PENCAK SILAT uses the animals and elements of the ancient Buhun fighting arts of ancient Indonesia and I have added back the superior fluidity FROM THE OLD THAILAND JERNG to the rest of it, that was so lacking as well as a more complete understanding of full body mechanics, wave and spiral energy that God used to create the universe. This is unique to my martial art. This is why our moving expression, of say, the seated Jurus is far different and our Sera Depok is far more fluid, dynamic and effective than you will see elsewhere, just look. Let it be known to all that the internal aspects of this art incorporate the elements that God created and we address this from the ancient mystical Christian aspects, not Islamic Hindu or Buddhist. Christianity entered Indonesia in the first century through trade with India. Today it’s the second largest religion in Indonesia. One of the most famous Empus in Java is Christian and honors his keris as he makes them with Christian prayers. You do not need to fear being indoctrinated in other beliefs and ideologies here in PCPS AMERICAN PENCAK SILAT. Indonesia even itself always had and still has a law that required each person to believe only in God. There is absolutely no truth that you MUST use Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist beliefs in silat. Today 99 percent of the Indo teachers have been indoctrinated into Islam because they drove out and killed most everyone else who openly did anything else and so that is the story you will get if you ask them, just Islam. Funny how some hail a master must be open to all ideas yet they run and cringe if you say I am Christian and will honor that in my training. Hypocrisy for sure on their part. They are only “open” if they like it. Those there who do other things in Indonesia stay hidden for fear of being murdered unless you go to Bali where the Hindus fled and still flourish. If you don’t want that, study with us. FYI Indo Mysticism now is simply prayers to Mohammad the murderer and child molester and Allah. Do not be fooled by that. Sadly many are taken in little by little to the Jihad mentality as we see being done under the cover of teaching modern silat in many places. NOT HERE, NOT EVER. First of all, I’d like to point out to that the Cimande style is one of the most famous in Indonesia and along with such styles as Minangkabau, is certainly one of the oldest. Many of the newer » styles have historically drawn their inspiration from Cimande or have incorporated its techniques to some degree. The influence of Cimande is clearly recognized in many pencak silat styles in Java and Sunda. With this in mind, let’s specifically discuss some Cimande history. It is important to know that most of the data pertaining to the origins of Cimande, its founder, and influences, has been handed down for centuries via an oral tradition. The founder of this style did not leave an official » history in written form. With this in mind it seems very unlikely to say that this -or any – version is to be considered the ultimate truth. We can only say with certainty that this-or-that version is accepted by a particular school, or a particular region, or village. Without any designs on proclaiming the One Truth », it is interesting to examine the different versions in order to get a broad idea of the style, its founders, its ancestors. To that end, I offer several translations from reliable sources that I have gathered amongst various teachers while traveling in West Java. PAK KAHIR’S LIFE The life of Pak Kahir excerpt from Gema Pencak Silat No. 118-19 The creator of the style of Pencak Silat Cimande, Pak Kahir, was known as pendekar respected around 1760, when he first presented his jurus mem’po Cimande » to his students. It was these same students who later spread his art in the surrounding districts like Batavia, Berkasi, Cikampek, Cianjur, Bandung, Tasik Malaya, Garut, Sumendang, CIAM, Cirebon and Kuningan. As a merchant of horses, Pak Kahir regularly traveled away from his village of Cogreg Bogor. It was during these business trips that he was sometimes accosted by bandits and thieves. Through his mastery of combat, he was never hurt or robbed. During his many trips to the cosmopolitan port of Batavia, he met and exchanged ideas with fighters from Minangkabau land and China as well as local teachers in the region. He used these opportunities to share knowledge and test his skills with them. The interaction with fighters from different cultures enabled him to assess the effectiveness of his art. During one of his visits to Cianjur, he met Raden Adipate Wiratanudatar 1776-1813 the sixth Regent of Cianjur. Shortly after this meeting, Pak Kahir decided to settle near Cianjur in the village of Kamurang. When the regent learned that Pak Kahir was an expert in martial arts, he asked him to teach his art to his family. In order to test Pak Kahir’s skill, the Regent arranged for him a fight with an expert of Chinese Kuntao from Macau. The battle took place on the esplanade of Cianjur and was won handily by Pak Kahir. His victory against the fighter Kuntao made him even more popular in the region of Cianjur. In 1815, with his 5 sons, Endut, Ocod, Otang, Komar and Oyota, Pak Kahir to Bogor. The 5th son later spread Cimande in Pasundan Tanah » Sunda Land. Meanwhile, another student – Ace – continued the spread of Cimande in Bogor. The descendants of Ace are currently living in Tarikolot, teaching what is known as the old system » which is referred to as Cimande Tarikolot Kebun Jeruk Hilir. » The early nineteenth century was the golden age of Cimande. It became the most popular style in West Java. Pak Kahir died in 1825. His fighting art continued to be appreciated by the people of West Java. Other styles based its teachings were developed by students such as Pak Sera and Haji Abdul Rosidi. Haji Abdul Rosidi created his own style called Ciwaringin, changing some of the Jurus Cimande. But even with these changes, it is not very far from the original form of maen’po Cimande. Today, Cimande is practiced around the world in one form or another. As Pak Kahir did not leave any written record of techniques, there are many diverse groups of Cimande relying heavily on oral tradition to establish history and method. PAK KAHIR’S LIFE Courtesy of Eric Chatelier From a historical novel Pangeran Sundanese Kornel written by Raden Memed Sastrahadiprawira The paragraph below gives a clear description of Abah Kahir also known as Embah, or Ayah Eyang Kahir the legendary creator of Pencak Silat Cimande. Of all the styles of Pencak Silat from Indonesia, Cimande is perhaps the most well known, oldest and most influential. There are a number of versions on the life of Abah Kahir dealing with the origins of Cimande, sources of inspiration, and lineage. According to a popular version in the community of Pencak Silat Banten, Abah Kahir was a Badui, an ethnic group inhabiting the mountainous regions of southwestern Banten. According to legend, the Baduis are descendants of the soldiers Ind. bala Tentara of Ratu Pucuk Umum, the last king of the Hindu kingdom of Pajajaran who was at the time the location of the current Bogor. When Ratu Pucuk Umum abdicated before the Muslim armies led by Molan Yusup Banten regent 1570-1580 in 1579, a concession was granted by the court stating that the king would be spared if they agreed to isolate themselves in this region. The tradition of the martial arts of Pajajaran was preserved and transmitted through the ages. According to this version, Abah Kahir, who was from the Badui region of Cikeusik, was known as an expert in Badui Ulin Silat Badui. His reputation soon spread beyond the Badui territory and several Pencak Silat exponents dared to test his skill. These challengers all died at the hands of Abah Kahir. The fact that blood had defiled the sacred land of Baduis was considered to be serious misconduct according to traditional laws. Among the Badui such misconduct could not remain unpunished. The elders decided to banish Abah Kahir from the Badui land. To ensure that such incidents would not happen again, Abah Kahir adopted a code of silence during his sojourns regarding the Badui and their martial arts. It is said that this code of silence still exists in the present day. Leaving his native land, Abah Kahir worked as a porter for a Chinese merchant. The merchant was a hard man, who was also a practitioner of Chinese Kuntao. One day Abah Kahir decided to take a rest from his work. The Chinese merchant became furious and ordered him to return to work immediately. The altercation quickly escalated into a fight which resulted in the death of Chinese merchant. As a result of this incident, Abah Kahir was left with the feeling that through his lack of self-control, he had literally killed his livelihood. He vowed that from this moment, he would use his art only to serve humanity. It was shortly after this event that the term maenpo was created to refer to the Pencak Silat of the Sunda region. Abah Kahir blamed himself because of its lack of self-control, he realized he had killed the source of his livelihood . He therefore sware that from this moment, he would use his art only to serve humanity. As Wessi pointed out, the Badui Code of Conduct » has symbolic importance in Sundanese culture as a sort of Moral Compass. Owing to their isolation from the modern world and the minimal influence of Islam in this era, the Badui have maintained traditions that are no longer found elsewhere in West Java and therefore are regarded as more pure, or authentic. In the same vein, the Kingdom of Pajajaran is often mentioned as a symbol of pure Sundanese culture. There is even a belief which holds after his death a Sundanese becomes a resident of Pajajaran » in the form of a tiger. In the field of contemporary ethnography, the many legends surrounding the figure of Abah Kahir express two main themes first they nature-ize » the Cimande style by ascribing its creation to various phenomenon in the physical environment; and second, the legends refer to some form of Divine Inspiration on the part of the founder. The influence of Pencak Silat Cimande in West Java is constantly expanding. The majority of schools that are found there today trace a link with Cimande either from a technical, philosophical or historical perspective. It’s almost become a rule for schools to express a tribute even if merely symbolic to Cimande. This style is also recognized in West Sumatra as one of the oldest, due to the fact that the word Mande means mother » in the language of the Mingkabau. In Kampung Babakan Tarikolot village, the current descendants of Abah Kahir adhere to their precious tradition. Here Cimande is still taught in the same manner as in the past, without any influence from other styles or other modern innovations. According to some village sources, Abah Kahir is not considered to be the creator of Cimande, but rather the first teacher of this style. According to a family tree held sacred by Ace Sutisna, – current leader of the family of Cimande Keluarga Besar Cimande Pencak Silat – Cimande begins with Embah Buyut, which translates literally to great-grandfather » but in Sundanese means rather founding ancestor ». It is not clear whether this term is linked to a particular individual or if it is used as a generic term that is related to founding ancestors generally. According to Pak Ace, from generation to generation descendants of Cimande use the name ». The silsilah traces 7 generations, which pak Ace considers to span for 350 years. If Embah Buyut was a historical figure it would mean he would have lived between the middle of the seventeenth and eighteenth century. This corresponds to the dates when Abah Kahir is supposed to have started teaching, circa 1760, making him a practitioner of the second generation of Cimande and the first generation as a teacher. Expressing respect is an important part of Silsilah, it would be wrong to interpret this as a mere recitation of pedigree. The invocation of these names authenticates and blesses practice today. The grave of Buyut Abah and his son Abah Rangger are found to the west of Kampung Tarikolot. Between the twelfth and the fourteenth day of the Muslim Maulud month, the graves of Buyut Abah, Abah Rangger as well as Ace Naseh Abah Abah and Kahir are visited by pilgrims, most of whom are from local Cimande and various communities of Pencak Silat in West Java. In the tradition of Cianjur, it is said that Abah Kahir earned his living as a merchant of horses and traveled regularly to Batavia Jakarta and in other parts of West Java. During his travels, he often encountered problems with wild animals such as tigers and jaguars and also with thieves. It is through these experiences that Abah Kahir developed a formidable system of self-defense. At Batavia, he met followers of martial arts from China and West Sumatra who helped refine his art. When Raden Aria Wiratanudatar VI regent of Cianjur / 1776-1813 became aware of the reputation of Abah Kahir, he hired him as a Pamuk – the Sundanese term for a master of Pencak Silat used by aristocrats. From this period, it is said that he taught only the family of the Regent, and eventually he himself became part of the Royal Court. Abah Kahir had five sons Endut, Otang, Komar, and oyota Ocod who developed Cimande from Bogor to Bandung in Cianjur and throughout West Java. Shortly after the death of Wiratanudatar in 1813, Abah Kahir setteled at Kampung Tarikolot, Cimande, where he remained until his death in 1825. As far as Pak Ace is concerned, these words convey a negative image of Abah Kahir, making him out to be an aggressive man at odds with the spirit and philosophy of defense as the foundations of the Cimande style. Once you develop control with the stick, you can then practice with a Golok. The ibing is a dance in which one seeks to focus power in various parts of the body wrists, shoulders, etc. working with rhythm and music. When Willy Wetzel had his fight with the North Thai Fon Jerng stylist, and then learned from him, a fusion was created Wetzel taught his version of. I have discovered there were things inserted into the Wetzel art to be commercially taught that sort of lost the original intent of the Fon Jerng Masters who still teach those things in the pure form and understanding now of what certain moves were ACTUALLY FOR, has been very helpful in improving the art. This has been the case in all the aspects of the Old Indo and Thai arts I studied in their pure forms. It has made this art so much better and I can explain it from the actual root meanings now. I will give you here a little bit of the history for the first time written about in the USA, to my knowledge from my teacher. ANCIENT ORIGINS OF FON OR FOHN JERNG FON OR FOHN JERNG in the Tibeto-Burma- North Thai language of Shan has a separate meaning for each of the two components. Fohn means “the Dance “while Jerng here is the art of fighting. The Dance of the fight. Taken separately, The Fohn can be done for exercise and health and for a show of the art in itself. The Tiger, Monkey, Snake, Crane and Naga as well as the four elements are also in Fon Jerng. This art has its ancient roots in the KINGDOM OF DALI and its fight against invaders where it was developed especially for protection against the invading Chinese. Saying this is Chinese art infuriates the old masters. One of the famous masters who has been instructing me, wrote this, as to that question, he himself once posed to an old master Ajarn Gankham, Ajarn replied with disdain THIS MARTIAL ART HAS BEEN WITH US SINCE OUR ANCESTORS TIME. WE DID NOT STEAL IT FROM ANY OTHER NATION. WE ARE NOT USING OTHER PEOPLES WAYS, FROM THE OLD TIMES TILL TODAY SHAN IS A WARRIOR NATION BY ITS NATURE WE HAVE BEEN FIGHTING WITH OTHER NATIONS MOST OF THE TIME. WHO ELSE WILL COME AND TEACH US HOW TO FIGHT, IF NOT FROM WITHIN, OUR OWN PEOPLE? IT IS IMPOSSIBLE THAT THE CHINESE ENEMY WOULD EVER TRAIN US TO FIGHT THEM. In fact, many of the masters proclaim it was the Chinese who after occupying the areas added what they saw into their own arts as they could, NOT the other way around. The Chinese even had a name for these people and their region which was the Nanzhao, or Lords of the South. This Empire was the strongest prior to 902 AD. In 902 there was an internal battle and the entire royal family was wiped out in this power struggle. The next kings however kept the center still based in Dali and adopted the name of Gandharfor for their realm. There are four distinct family roots of Fon Jerng my teacher was able to identify. 1. Tai luang family Lai Tai Luan or Lai Tai Ya 2. Muang Na Chan Ta family Lai Muang Na Chan Ta 3. Ngua Hua Kha family. Lai Ngua Hua Kha 4. Mostly, styles are about, techniques, a philosophy, a set of moves that is not the same as another art. Most of these things are subjective and you often hear, well everyone only has two arms and two legs they forgot there is an entire inner structure that can be involved if you know how. PCP Fon Jerng Sanders American Thai Indo Silat and the Old Royal Siam-Thailand Jerng Martial Art Connection New Revelations on the Hidden History of a Portion of Our Art Beginning with art I first learned from Guru John Malter, that he learned from Willy Wetzel, I sought to unravel the actual history of the art. Along the way and after many trips to Indonesia, speaking with people who were in the prisoner of war camps with master Wetzel and others, I quickly became aware that story of the Chinese Kung Fu master practicing with the Indonesian master Mas Jud for 3 years was positively not true. Once I located the actual family of Mas Jud, and located many of his old students to ask, this was verified 100 percent. I wrote a thesis on this subject for the University of Asian Martial art studies that earned my Sc. Degree from them and which was turned into the book “The Real Pencak Silat and History of Mas Jud” which for the first time, accurately explained his life, his art and what he did. The problem still remained that the intricate flowing movements I was first taught, were never seen or equaled in any Indonesian style I saw, as a whole. As one of my long-time students said, that movement stood out like a Unicorn in Indonesia. Their arts today by comparison are stiff and robotic when compared to these fluid moves. The Old Mas Jud students had much more flow than normally seen in Pencak Silat, as it relates to the fighting applications, but still, at least now, still not as much. I had to continually “fix” what I learned there to make it more applicable to the flow and continuous combative moves. The village Cimande, while having some very valuable striking applications are just awful in their stiff executions of these moves, which again I had to transform into a better way of moving and delivery and I did. Make no mistake I also learned the entire Village Cimande art of Embah Kahir and the old Sera from Pendekar Mama Sukarma before adding my way of movement to them and after testing was awarded the highest title of Pendekar in those arts as well. This mastery achievement was signed off on by EVERY village elder there at the time. I wanted to see what his direct lineage had given Mas Jud and how it fit in. I also learned directly from the Mas Jud family as well, the full Sera Depok system he used and his training and animal styles and was given the authority to teach his entire art they had, unlike all the others claiming his art, they put this in writing and it was signed by his family. No one else who claims to have Mas Jud lineage has this to my knowledge, or theirs. Yet I still need to put my delivery system to all of this to improve it when I teach it. Where did the better continuity of movement and flow go and where did it come from in the first place? Up till now this was NOT clear. The answer to this puzzle has now been revealed. One of my friends and a person who had purchased a lot of my DVDs in the past and is a scholar of many older arts, sent me a video, a video in which he observed an old art, not Indo -Islamic based, that he wanted to share with me. He said it reminded him of my art. I sat down to watch it and I was AMAZED at what I saw. This video I will share here showed THE EXACT TYPE OF MOVEMENT WE LEARNED IN MY FIRST ART FOR THE MORE DISTANCE APPLICATIONS. I, at once recognized stances, positions and more, even the exact same manner my teacher used to centrally tie his red sash with the same knot, it could actually have been a film from an early class of the advanced people back then! My older students who viewed it instantly saw it as well and felt the same. Take a look at this video, if you know this art you will see it at once. Once I saw where this was from, THAILAND, I WAS SHOCKED and I need to relate a strange but related story that created my surprise and cemented the connection that had been missing for so long. Some years ago, when I lived in California, I received a hand written 3-page letter. The letter explained how a royal family was driven from Thailand, had a long journey and went to Java. There this art became part of the base of the Wetzel art, in fact he said, A MAJOR PORTION. I did not know this person and frankly, sadly, I dismissed it as some kind of made-up nonsense. Because, NO ONE HAD EVER SUGGESTED THIS IN THE PAST. I kept that letter for a long time but when I moved and had to discard many things it went in the trash. IF BY ANY CHANCE THE PERSON WHO SENT ME THAT LETTER READS THIS, PLEASE CONTACT ME AGAIN! So, until now, I basically forgot and dismissed it. BUT HERE I SAW THE ART WITH MY OWN EYES AND YES, THAT PART WAS FROM THE ANCIENT SIAM-THAILAND AREA. I discovered much more after viewing more clips. Its name is generic, like Pencak Silat is to the Indonesian arts and it is called FON JERNG which basically means DANCE OF THE FIGHT, a fighting art and there were and are many family styles of that, as there are family Pencak Silat styles in Indonesia etc. The written history goes back over 700 years to the Kingdom of Lana in what is now North Thailand and the ancient Deli Kingdom and the influence was from Burma –India etc. It is characterized by continues and fluid moves without interruption, the same as in the first art I was taught. IT IS CLEAR TO ME NOW, THIS IS THE REAL COLABORATION BETWEEN THE INDO PENCAK SILAT – MAS JUD AND ANOTHER ART. Remember that name they use, OI KIM BOEN and some variations on the first two words, like King Boen, which I found strange at the time, that was often used? Well, it’s funny they even tried to pass this off as a Chinese man. BUT BOEN IS ACTUALLY A DUTCH NAME AND IS A PLACE NOT A PERSON! BOEN NAME MEANING - DUTCH variant of Boone, Norwegian Boen habitational name from a common farm name Boen The farm’ FROM bo, farm or meadow.” HERE I BELIEVE IS THE REAL NAME ONG KHUN- BOEN. Ong is a numerative noun for Kings, Princes, Angels, Palaces, etc. so the King variation I have seen was more correct KHUN, MEANS SIR OR LORD, MASTER. A high-level person who came from or was found working on a farm etc. The descriptive part, that language is Thai! This was being told by a Dutch Indo so they used a Dutch name for coming from a Farm etc. Watching further clips of this art I saw many interesting things. On one video, 40 seconds in, the man does the triangle Bow of Mas Jud. In one sequence there are Sera Depok Juru moves being performed. In another clip the man is perfuming ON THE EXACT SAME SQUARE WITH THE X AND STRAIGHT LINE AS IN MAS JUDS SERA DEPOK AND IS SEEN IN MY BOOK! In one video there was a large diagram they were performing on, the same as another Dutch Indo style uses here who claims some connection to Mas Jud, but it’s not from him, its Old Siamese. Follow this now. In the 1930’s a great upheaval occurred in Thailand and some intellectuals who had studied in PARIS, BRUTALLY reorganized the country in some Communistic/Western revolution. Basically decapitating hence the death of the old aristocracy and revamped a lot of the old culture, interestingly this is when “sportified” Muay Thai emerged. This sport, just as Perisa Diri, was in Indonesia was A DIRECT ATTEMPT TO KILL OFF THE OLD ARTS and remove the ancient influences. In the real Fon Jerng their stances and postures how they start prayers to God, etc. as well as fighting positions are pure, unaltered from ancient times. Back in the 60-70s Chinese Kung Fu was very popular and it seems they tried to pass off the name with a Chinese twist but oddly left the last Dutch name of a place – farm etc. intact. Back then it drew no attention as most had no idea of the languages or meanings anyway, we didn’t. Was this because Dutch Indonesians related the tale? Or did a Dutchman marry into a Siam family, learn the art and go to Indonesia where he showed the art and maintained the royal formality of his name simply for prestige, etc.? The Dutch had been in Siam for 400 years, so it’s possible. Siam by the way had the name changed to Thailand in 1939 in the upheaval I mentioned. The Chinese tale was fabricated purely to take advantage of the Kung –Fu Shaolin temple craze and they even had Willy Wetzle living in a secret Shaolin-like monastery in Indonesia as a Black 10th degree dragon as part of that temple-kung fu type lore to sell the art when I first started. That nonsense was written up and put on the wall for all the students to see by John Malter who got it right from Willy Wetzel his teacher. Who would have known what Jerng was? This is the same reason they never used the term “Pencak Silat” as well. To add to the proof, I now have discovered by the video words, of many of the Dutch Indo teachers like Willy Wetzle and knew him personally the following. They revealed that in WWII, the Japanese segregated all the Dutch Indo prisoners of which Willy was one and SENT THEM ALL TO PRISONER CAMPS IN SIAM, Now Thailand Willy was there! Willy himself did use the story Willy met a teacher from Siam, they got into an argument, as the story went, he worked for Willy and they fought. Willy was soundly beaten and asked the man to teach him HIS ART! That’s as close as they got to letting the cat out of the bag and clearly showed Willy learned this art. So he actually said it, just not in detail. As that old letter I received told me, an aristocratic old family had to flee and seek their fortune elsewhere, wound up in Java teaching their royal art. This now seems so. There is no way a lot of what we were taught was not Not Fon Jerng, the great Shan, passed on well from some source from Siam AKA North Thailand. The Thais who do Jerng now for sure do some of what I saw Juds people do, like the drawn diagram on the ground, a circle drill, the Bow and some specific Juru moves of Sera Depok. Their influence must have run deep in his version of Sera Depok, etc. So while I do not know exactly who was the man Ong Khun -Boen,The Royal Thai from the fields-farm etc. I can tell you that I saw that man’s pseudonym in both the Wetzel line and the DeThoaurs line. I saw it in the De Thouars line when I saw it on a test one of them gave their students, in the form of, “who is Oi King Boen?” He had blatantly denied knowing a thing of this name before I pulled his old test out of a pile of papers we were going through together and showed him his one question he prepared for his own students in the past asking that very question! Never heard of him, LOL, YEA RIGHT. But he refused to comment at all and was embarrassed I found it after flat out denying he knew anything of the name and just got up and stormed off. Just more of the planned cover-up. In modern times it might appear to outsiders that a lot of Fon Jerng may have lost much of the old combative applications as they seem to concentrate on the dance applications for public display, BUT NOTHNG COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. As I have now actually been both researching and learning Fon Jerng I can assure you their combative applications are better, incomparable to any modern Pencak Silat I have seen. There are also spiritual applications which by the way are also prayers to God as they move, taken from the old ways. It not an easy system to get entrance into and I have been blessed with great friendships with some of the best teachers there. I will name and honor them on my DVDS I will make. I have discovered so much now about what we have, more of what actual animals are associated with various concepts. How many animal mannerisms are utilized and they ARE ALL RELATED TO THE ELLEMENTS THEY CORRESPOND TO AS WELL. By the way I was teaching the elements here that no one else was for 40 years and now I see this was a MAJOR part of Fon Jerng as well. ALSO A BRAND NEW MAJOR ANIMAL INFLUENCE HAS BEEN SHOWN TO ME THAT WE ALWAYS HAD BUT WENT UN-NAMED. THE ONE WE USE MORE THAN ANY OTHER FOR OUR LOWER BODY DESTRUCTION, THE ELLEPHANT!! I can tell you if you look at the snout of the Wetzle dragon, the longer snout, how it curls up on the upper lip portion and down on the lower portion, you can clearly see the elephant trunk being shown. There will be much more to come on this for my students as well, and to me It’s very revealing and exciting. At any rate we have not forgotten them nor do we hide the animal influences. In a sense my trips to Indonesia allowed me to put back many combat applications needed, but the Thai way of movement guided me to seek more effectiveness through movement and I improved the movement as well over the years so we don’t just flow in one speed. Guess what, the Shan art of Fon Jerng uses SPIRALS, AND CIRCLES AS WELL. Finding this art was like discovering a long lost relative, one I knew had to exist but had no idea how to locate. I also want to give this credit to the Shan arts that was hidden and denied previously. The very BEST parts of how we move come from the old royal Thailand Jerng systems, period. Not Chinese and not Indonesian. Pukulan Cimande Pusaka Fon Jerng Sanders American Thai Indo Silat has a strong Jerng base we cannot and will not deny and I far prefer to any moves by any modern Silat in Indonesia you now see. But we have forged these moves with old Silat combative ways as well just as the old story indicated and proposed to have done. Silat cimande diketahui berasal dari Kampung Tarikolot, Desa Cimande, Kecamatan Caringin, Kabupaten Bogor. Kata cimande sendiri berasal dari istilah cai iman anu hade atau air iman yang baik dan sebutan lainnya yaitu ciri manusia anu hade atau ciri manusia yang baik. Maksudnya, manusia yang baik memiliki 2 sifat yaitu tara pasea raga raga tak pernah bertengkar dan tara pasea rasa rasa tak pernah bertengkar yang dapat diartikan raga tak pernah bertengkar yaitu kita tidak pernah menganiaya orang lain, sedangkan rasa tak pernah bertengkar yaitu kita tidak pernah syirik, dengki, dendam pada orang lain, itu kalau kita mengaku sebagai manusia yang baik. Dan pada dasarnya, pencak silat cimande sendiri bertujuan untuk pertahanan diri atau melindungi orang-orang yang lemah dan bukan untuk menyerang asal mula silat cimande sendiri masih menjadi misteri di kalangan masyarakat. Informasi mengenai sejarah awal mula silat cimande belum diketahui secara pasti. Banyak versi dalam penafsiran mengenai sejarah, awal terbentuknya hingga tokoh penggagas silat cimande. Selama ini informasi yang didapat hanya berdasarkan opini atau dari mulut ke mulut, bukan secara langsung dari tokoh atau orang yang mengetahui secara pasti tentang silat ini. Menurut aba Aman, guru besar silat cimande wilayah ciputat, penggagas silat cimande berjumlah 7 orang, salah satu yang terkenal yaitu aba khaer yang merupakan tokoh agama yang sangat disegani pada zaman dahulu bahkan sebelum kemerdekaan dalam silat cimande, terdapat 12 jurus dasar, yang sebagian besar bersumber dari gerakan salat. Di dalam satu jurus, terdapat beberapa kembangan atau bisa disebut cabang dari jurus tersebut. Kembangan di dalam silat cimande kurang lebih berjumlah 100 kembangan, yang setiap kembangan nya memiliki fungsi dan tujuannya masing-masing. Jurus dan kembangan itu sendiri, digagas oleh 7 tokoh pendahulu. Mereka melakukan tafakur ketika ingin mencetuskan jurus dan kembangan di dalam silat cimande. Bagi para pesilat pemula cimande, terdapat sumpah janji cimande atau biasa disebut sebagai talk cimande. talk cimande merupakan kode etik yang harus ditaati dan ditepati oleh keluarga besar cimande dengan talk, ada juga tahap pengurutan tangan di dalam silat cimande dilakukan 7 minggu berturut-turut setiap malam jumat dan tidak boleh terputus. Sebab, jika terputus walaupun hanya satu minggu, maka harus mengulangnya dari awal. Itu merupakan hal yang sudah menjadi tradisi turun temurun di dalam silat cimande. Dipilihnya malam jumat sebagai malam pengurutan bagi pada pesilat pemula, sebab malam jumat merupakan malam utama yang terdapat banyak keberkahan dan dikabulkannya seluruh hajat. Ada pula kegiatan rasullan atau kegiatan makan bersama yang dilakukan oleh para pesilat cimande menggunakan alas daun pisang beserta lauk yang disediakan atau masyarakat biasa menyebutkan dengan liwetan. Kegiatan ini dilakukan jika sudah menguasai beberapa jurus yang ada di cimande. Rasullan sendiri merupakan bentuk rasa syukur kepada Allah yang telah memberikan nikmat, sehingga para pesilat cimande bisa mendalami dan belajar silat dilakukan pada saat selesai pengurutan 7 minggu berturut-turut setiap malam jum’at. Ada pula keceran mata yang dilakukan oleh para pelatih kepada muridnya, keceran mata dilakukan menggunakan air daun sirih, lalu diteteskan ke mata para pesilat cimande. Hal ini bertujuan untuk mempertajam penglihatan jika terdapat serangan dari musuh serta membersihkan mata dan menyucikan mata. Agar lebih dapat menggunakan mata secara bijak, dengan menghindari hal-hal yang yang haram dilihat dalam agama. Begitu banyak rangkaian proses yang dilalui para pesilat cimande untuk mendalami seni bela diri ini dan tak jarang terkandung makna tersirat dari proses-proses hal ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa silat cimande adalah salah satu warisan budaya nusantara yang harus dilestarikan terutama bagi generasi muda. Silat cimande sendiri bertujuan untuk pertahanan diri dan melindungi kamu yang lemah, bukan sarana untuk menyombongkan kebisaan yang dimiliki. Bagi kamu perempuan, silat ini juga sangat berguna sebagai benteng perlawanan diri ketika ada ancaman di sekeliling yang dapat mengancam diri sendiri bahkan orang lain. Di dalam silat cimande juga terdapat banyak pesan moral yang dapat dipetik hikmahnya serta mengajarkan manusia untuk selalu bersifat rendah hati dengan tidak menyombongkan diri atas kemampuan yang dimiliki.
